AC Compressor Repair

We repair and replace failing AC compressors in homes across Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia. The compressor is the pump in your outdoor unit that moves refrigerant, and when it struggles you get warm air, loud humming, breakers tripping, or an outdoor unit that clicks and quits. If your air conditioner is running but the house is not cooling, shut the system off at the thermostat so it stops short-cycling and call us. We will read the electrical side and refrigerant pressures and tell you plainly what the compressor is doing.

What AC compressor repair actually involves

Most calls that sound like a bad compressor are not one. We start by confirming the compressor is getting proper voltage and that the parts feeding it are healthy, because a failed capacitor, contactor, or start winding will mimic a dead compressor. If those check out, we test windings to ground and measure pressures on both sides of the system. A compressor that will not start but is electrically sound gets a different plan than one that has shorted internally. We explain which one you have before any work begins.

What we check and what we replace

We look at the capacitor, contactor, wiring connections, and the disconnect at the outdoor unit, then check refrigerant charge, coil condition, and airflow inside. Low charge and a filthy condenser coil are the two things that kill compressors early, so we address the cause and not only the part. Depending on findings we replace hard-start components, clean and clear the coil, correct a charge problem, or install a new compressor and filter drier. On sealed-system work we recover refrigerant properly and pressure test before recharging.

How we decide repair or replacement

Three things drive the call: the age of the outdoor unit, what refrigerant it uses, and whether the failure damaged the rest of the system. Swapping a compressor into an older unit with a corroded coil and an obsolete refrigerant often buys you one hot season. A newer system with a warrantied compressor is usually worth the repair. We also check whether contamination from a burnout has spread through the lines, because that changes the work considerably. You get both numbers and our reasoning, then you decide.

AC Compressor Repair — quick answers

Can I keep running my AC while I wait for a compressor diagnosis?

Turn it off at the thermostat. A compressor that keeps trying to start and failing draws heavy current, trips breakers, and can overheat. Running it will not cool the house and may worsen the damage.

Why does my outdoor unit hum but the fan and cooling never start?

That hum is often the compressor trying to start against a failed capacitor or contactor, or a locked rotor. It needs electrical testing to tell the difference. Both are common and one is a much smaller repair.

Does a new compressor fix my cooling for good?

Only if the reason it failed is corrected. Low refrigerant, a blocked condenser coil, or poor indoor airflow will take out a new compressor too, so we find and fix the cause during the same visit.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form. We ask what changed, when it started, and what the thermostat reads. That short conversation tells us whether you need a visit today or tomorrow morning.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and ducts, and the equipment itself. We find the actual cause instead of swapping parts and hoping the noise goes away.

  3. Step 3

    You decide before we work

We explain what failed, what the repair involves, and what we would do if it were our own house. Nothing gets replaced until you say go. Then we test the system before leaving.

Why homeowners call us

  • Old houses and new onesWe are used to century-old homes with retrofitted ductwork and 1970s subdivisions with original returns. Tight crawl spaces, low basement headroom and odd attic runs are normal parts of the day for us, not surprises that stall the job.
  • Built for the swingsHumid summers push AC systems hard and January freezes expose weak igniters and cracked flues. We repair for both extremes across the region, so the fix holds when the weather turns instead of failing the first hard week.
  • Air conditioning and heating bothAir conditioner repair in July, heating repair in January, and the IAQ and airflow problems that hide in between. One crew that knows how your cooling and heating share the same blower and the same duct system.
  • Plain talk, no pressureWe tell you when a repair makes sense and when replacement is the honest answer. No scare tactics about your BTU load, no upsell scripts. You get the condition of the system and a clear next step.
  • All major brands, gas & electricEvery major HVAC brand, gas and electric, handled by an independent crew.
  • Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
