The independent heating and cooling company across Kentucky and the Ohio Valley

Heat Pump Not Heating

We repair heat pumps that run but will not heat, at homes across Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia. If your vents are blowing cool or room-temperature air in January, the outdoor unit is iced over, or the system is stuck on emergency heat, that is this job. Turn the thermostat to heat, confirm it is not set to cool or fan-only, check the breaker, and change a loaded filter. If it still will not heat, call us and we will get a technician out.

What This Repair Involves

A heat pump moves heat instead of making it, so no-heat calls usually come down to one of a few things: the reversing valve is not switching the system into heating mode, refrigerant charge is low, the outdoor coil is buried in ice, or the defrost control has failed. We start at the thermostat and work outward, reading what the system is actually doing rather than guessing. Most visits end with a diagnosis and a repair the same trip, and we tell you plainly what we found.

What We Check

We check thermostat wiring and mode signals, the reversing valve and its solenoid, the defrost board and sensors, the outdoor fan, the contactor, and the capacitor. We take refrigerant pressures and temperature splits to see whether the system is short on charge or restricted. We look at auxiliary heat strips too, since a heat pump leaning on backup heat all winter is telling you something. On older systems we inspect the coil for damage from years of freeze and thaw cycles.

How We Decide It Is The Right Call

If the blower runs, the outdoor unit runs, and the air still is not warm, that is a heat pump repair and not a thermostat problem. Ice on the coil during a hard freeze can be normal briefly, but a unit that never clears it needs a defrost check. When a compressor is failing or a leak keeps returning, we say so and lay out repair against replacement with real numbers on the table. We would rather tell you the truth than sell you a part twice.

Heat Pump Not Heating — quick answers

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air in winter?

Heat pump supply air is cooler than furnace air by nature, so it can feel drafty. But room-temperature or cold air usually points to a stuck reversing valve, low refrigerant, or a defrost cycle that will not end.

Is ice on my outdoor unit a problem?

A light frost that clears within a defrost cycle is normal. A thick coat of ice that stays for hours, or ice at the top of the cabinet, means the defrost control or airflow needs a technician's eyes.

Should I just run emergency heat?

You can use it to stay warm until we arrive, and it will keep the house safe. It is far more expensive to run, so treat it as a short bridge and call us rather than a season-long fix.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form. We ask what changed, when it started, and what the thermostat reads. That short conversation tells us whether you need a visit today or tomorrow morning.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and ducts, and the equipment itself. We find the actual cause instead of swapping parts and hoping the noise goes away.

  3. Step 3

    You decide before we work

We explain what failed, what the repair involves, and what we would do if it were our own house. Nothing gets replaced until you say go. Then we test the system before leaving.

Why homeowners call us

  • Old houses and new onesWe are used to century-old homes with retrofitted ductwork and 1970s subdivisions with original returns. Tight crawl spaces, low basement headroom and odd attic runs are normal parts of the day for us, not surprises that stall the job.
  • Built for the swingsHumid summers push AC systems hard and January freezes expose weak igniters and cracked flues. We repair for both extremes across the region, so the fix holds when the weather turns instead of failing the first hard week.
  • Air conditioning and heating bothAir conditioner repair in July, heating repair in January, and the IAQ and airflow problems that hide in between. One crew that knows how your cooling and heating share the same blower and the same duct system.
  • Plain talk, no pressureWe tell you when a repair makes sense and when replacement is the honest answer. No scare tactics about your BTU load, no upsell scripts. You get the condition of the system and a clear next step.
